Volunteer with Chifundo

As we've entered 2024, planning is already well underway for our Annual Summer School & with it, we are once again looking for volunteers who might be interested in joining the ever-growing community of Chifundo.

Our Summer School has proven to be one of the most significant initiatives of the past 15 years. Since it began in 2016 a total of 25 volunteers from a variety of backgrounds have visited Zomba.

These Summer Schools together with regular skills workshops run by the Trust, using local craftsmen have helped our Campus to become an inspiring and supportive learning environment for our 75 students.

Why Volunteer with Chifundo?

  • Make a real impact - we believe in allowing our volunteers to craft an education programme tailored to the needs of the children.

  • Experience a new world - leave your material luxuries behind and immerse yourself in a world stricken by poverty but filled with life, hope and laughter

  • Broaden your teaching experience - the children in the Chifundo Foundation will challenge you in ways that will help you learn and grow as a teacher.

  • Experience the warmth of Malawi - The people of the warm heart of Africa will welcome you with open arms and will stay within your heart and mind for years to come.

When does the Summer School take place?

The dates will always vary slightly year to year but typically the Summer School takes place between the last week in July and the first three weeks in August.

What would your day look like?

The Summer School runs for 4 weeks in total with volunteers asked to complete a two week cycle before handing over to the second group of volunteers to complete the second fortnight.

Your day will begin with breakfast as the children arrive on campus, their laughter and joy will become the soundtrack to your day.

After morning assembly, complete with music and song, the children are divided into their respective classes and yourself and another qualified teacher will lead them in lessons for the morning.

You will then break for lunch before helping to organise the children in the afternoon activities of sports and arts and crafts.

Dinner is served in the evening giving you the chance to relax and plan your lessons for the following day.

Dormitory style accommodation is provided on campus for all volunteers as is shared shower / toilet facilities. The Campus is also home to two classrooms, a very well stocked library, an office which is used to store resources etc and netball and soccer pitches.

This office is already stocked with a good range of teaching resources such as: lego, art & craft materials, stationary, a wide selection of posters, jigsaws, laptops and sports resources. These are available to use for any of the volunteers.

Testimonial

“I may only make a small mark on these children’s lives, but they have improved mine significantly. I hope that I have developed their levels of confidence and instilled in them a belief that there is no difference between themselves and the pupils that I teach in England in terms of their potential and their ability to thrive in the upcoming years.” - Eamonn
